Housing for Humanity International

Our Story

Building an Institution Around a Simple Belief.

The possibility of a decent home should be accessible to more people.

Housing for Humanity International was established from the recognition that addressing the housing challenge requires more than constructing buildings.

It requires practical solutions, innovative thinking, strong partnerships, community participation and engagement with the systems that determine housing access.

Where We Began

Housing remains one of the most fundamental elements of human wellbeing, yet access to safe, sustainable and affordable housing continues to present significant challenges for individuals and communities.

HOHI was founded by Emmanuel Durkwa with the ambition of building an organisation that could contribute to this challenge through practical housing initiatives, innovation, community empowerment and strategic partnerships.

Why HOHI Exists

The question is not simply: how do we build more houses? It is also: how do we make decent housing more accessible, sustainable and achievable? Answering that question requires us to consider the wider housing ecosystem.

  • Affordability matters.
  • Construction methods matter.
  • Infrastructure matters.
  • Financing matters.
  • Policy matters.
  • Skills matter.
  • Communities matter.
  • The environment matters.

The Housing Challenge

Housing challenges are rarely isolated. A home exists within a community. A community exists within an infrastructure system. Housing affordability is connected to finance and economic conditions. Construction is connected to materials, technology and skills. And access to housing is influenced by policy, land and institutional decisions.

For this reason, HOHI takes a broader view of housing. We work to connect people, ideas, solutions and systems.

The Journey Ahead

HOHI's story is still being written. Every initiative launched, community reached, solution tested, partnership formed and lesson learned will contribute to the institution we are building.
